Sparks, Crackles, and Other Random Thoughts – October 2013

Hello!

It’s been a long summer and fall is finally in the air. There have been lots of Ham activities to participate in and still some to go for October.

I am a little late with writing this as I got sidetracked. You see, I recently traded cars and am now the owner of a new pickup. The “silver bullet” HHR is gone. I pulled the mobile rig out of the car and was in the process of trying to figure out how to get it into the new ride when I remembered this note needed to go out.

It seems there is a lot of planning to putting a radio in a new vehicle. Power source, wire routing, antenna location, coax routing… where and how to mount the radio (and in my case the head of the 710), and as it’s all coming together there are new possibilities that pop up, even though it’s nearing completion.

Our ARES operations are like that, you know. We plan and practice and review and discuss, but when it’s time to really operate the event it’s always a new creation of its own. Oh, we go along the familiar trail of following a SOP but the real issues that come up are “way better” than we could plan and test for. But, because we have learned from the past and practiced procedures, our confidence in the ARES team will carry us thru every time.

Jump in and join us for our Face-to-Face training session coming up (check out the calendar on the website) and thanks for everyone that checks into the training nets.

Speaking of learning, Moe NT7C is in the middle of a class with a group of folks about to try for their General license. Classes are going well and he speaks well of the group’s attention and capabilities. I think they will do well in the future. There is also an opportunity for a Tech class coming up. If you know someone interested or considering Amateur Radio, check the website for more details and help them get on board.

Well, I need to dig into the parts box to find some powerpoles and a crimper… catch you next time.
